Acts 2:1-13
We read the story of the coming of the Holy Spirit in Acts 2:1-13. The 120 were gathered, waiting for the coming Spirit, and heard a sound like a mighty rushing wind as tongues of fire rested on each of them. They were all filled with the Spirit and began to speak other languages. Jews that had come from other countries for Pentecost were shocked as they heard the men from Galilee speaking in their own language. Some were amazed, but some mocked them, thinking they were drunk early in the day. However, it was the Spirit that gave them the ability to speak those other languages at that time.
The coming of the Spirit signifies the coming of the Kingdom. The restoration of God’s Kingdom has begun, but it is has not yet been completed. The nations are being invited, but they have not yet been gathered in. Until Christ returns, our commission is to invite more and more people into His Kingdom through the good news of repentance and faith in Him. Are you serving Christ’s Kingdom-advancing purposes, bearing witness to those in your home, workplace, and community? As you do, be assured that by the power of the Spirit, there will be a harvest. If you are struggling to obey Christ’s command, you are not to simply try harder and do better; you must admit your weaknesses and rely on the empowering presence of the Spirit who has been given to us. The Spirit of God has been given to us to fill out hearts and free our tongues so that we may proclaim the saving acts of God.
